Nintendo Direct: 17/05/13 Round-Up – Pikmin 3, Nintendo/SEGA and New Super Luigi U

sonic_lost_worldToday’s Nintendo Direct presentation has been relatively short, yet we’ve heard a couple of new release dates, and a totally unexpected partnership between Nintendo and SEGA! Read on for our round-up of today’s shenanigans.

  • A new game from SEGA is being announced – a brand-new Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics game!
  • Utilises the Wii Remote Plus controller
  • Some events return from the previous games, others are entirely new
  • Also makes use of GamePad controls for Curling and Archery, while others rely on asymmetry.
  • Sees the return of Dream Events, based in the worlds of Mario and Sonic
  • Meanwhile in Japan, Yakuza 1 + 2 HD has been announced for Wii U
  • Nintendo and SEGA have teamed up to develop future Sonic the Hedgehog games
  • Sonic Lost World from SEGA and Nintendo heading to Wii U and 3DS – more details at E3!
  • We’re now reminded that Game & Wario is out Wii U on 28th June. A look at a wacky new trailer
  • There’ll be a Game & Wario Iwata Asks interview online after the presentation
  • Iwata talks about the updates arriving in Capcom’s Wii U port of Resident Evil: Revelations
  • Arrives at retail and in the Nintendo eShop simultaneously on 24th May
  • New Super Luigi U multiplayer will see Mario replaced by Nabbit – joining Blue Toad and Red Toad!
  • New Super Luigi U arriving as DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U on 20th June
  • Also seeing release as a standalone retail release for a limited time online.
  • The retail version will be available from 26th June, and comes with fancy green box-art!
  • The Wonderful 101 is coming to Europe on 23rd August!
  • Pikmin 3 details up next! Three new main characters – Alph, Brittany and Charlie the captain
  • The planet is facing its doomsday due to a lack of food
  • Due to an accident, they crash land and encounter the mysterious Pikmin creatures
  • Must collect fruit as a food resource while exploring
  • Each day, as usual, has limited daylight hours
  • If you make mistakes while you play, you can restart the day or rewind to an earlier section of the game
  • In the first Pikmin game, the player had to start over and over to fully complete the game in a limited time
  • This time, there’s no big limit in terms of the days, so is much more accessible
  • In Pikmin 3, the GamePad transforms into the KopPad, shows where all your Pikmin are located
  • At the end of the day, the KopPad shows you a sped-up replay of your day in-game
  • Nintendo preparing a few types of game controls. GamePad or Wii U Pro Controller feel similar to playing GameCube originals
  • Meanwhile MotionPlus aims to be more comfortable, as in the New Play Control versions of the first two games
  • 26th July for Pikmin 3!
  • More information regarding Challenge and Multiplayer modes to be revealed later

And that was all from the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast. Not a bad line-up, although we’re adamant that the next – which should air around the same time as E3 – will be much more exciting and content-packed.
