The Wii version of Dragon Quest X launched in Japan last week, seeing Square Enix’s JRPG franchise go online for the first time in its 25-year-long lifespan. Dragon Quest IX on DS featured local multiplayer and even downloadable treasure maps via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, but Dragon Quest X is the first time the series has offered a Massively Multiplayer Online experience, and as such, Square Enix wants to keep players coming back for more.
To do this, it’s not only releasing two versions of the game – the current Wii version, as well as a HD re-release on Wii U – but also planning to support the title with downloadable content and major software updates every ten weeks, for ten years.
Despite additional content being made available frequently, do you think Dragon Quest X – or any game, for that matter – can hold your attention for ten years, providing it ever releases outside of Japan?
