News: New Smash Bros.’ Character Roster Will Be Refined Rather Than Expanded

Looks like you guys are all here to stay…

If you’re a Super Smash Bros. fan even to the slightest degree, you’ll no doubt be able to think of at least a couple of characters which you’d like to see included in the upcoming game for Wii U and 3DS.

With the inclusion of SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog and Konami’s Snake in Brawl, you’d have thought that the series’ creator, Masahiro Sakurai would be open to bringing in as many new characters as possible; and with Namco Bandai stepping in to help with development, you’d expect at least one of their IPs to make an appearance.

However, in an interview with Nintendo Power magazine, it’s been revealed that the game’s roster is likely to remain largely the same as its predecessors’:

“It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has fifty characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive.

“In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.”

If a larger roster is to be sacrificed for a more refined gameplay experience, that’s good by our books; but what would you like this ‘change of direction’ to include?
