Thus far into the Nintendo 3DS’s life, Zelda fans have been spoiled for choice with an array of titles in the series all available on the system as we speak – from the original NES games, The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link, to a remake of Ocarina of Time; from Game Boy Color and Advance games Link’s Awakening DX and Minish Cap, to the Anniversary Edition of Zelda: Four Swords. What the 3DS has lacked, however, is a brand-new, original game in Nintendo’s long-running series of action-adventure titles.
Shortly after the release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, many fans could be heard asking for a remake of the original’s follow-up, Majora’s Mask, whilst on the other hand, Miyamoto went on record to say that a remake or sequel in the style of A Link to the Past would be fun to develop.
However, the series’ producer seemed to oust any possibilites of potential remakes of past Zelda games on the Nintendo 3DS when he said that he’d like to start work on an original game at a time when the 3DS was often called a system which only has remakes and ports.
Despite these claims, though, an interview with Miyamoto has revealed that Nintendo is indeed preparing a Zelda game for the system, although the developers are yet to decide on which past game to cast inspiration from:
“We haven’t quite decided yet, whether we’re going to do A Link to the Past, because there’s also the possibility of doing a remake of Majora’s Mask. This is something we’ve certainly been talking about and doing a little bit of experimenting with, to figure out which way we’re going to go.”
So it seems that the next Zelda game to arrive on the Nintendo 3DS will be a remake after all. Which would you prefer a remake of – the classic 2D entry, or the darker sequel to the first 3D game in the series?
