News: F-Zero On its Way to Wii U?

In an interview with Edge magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto has commented on the possibility of a return of the F-Zero series after a eight-year-long hiatus, and explained the franchise’s absence from Nintendo’s current consoles.

“I think that at the time it was a really big surprise, a new thing, a product that made sense. I don’t see with current hardware how you would create a similar surprise. But maybe with future hardware, with Wii U coming up, maybe we could create something that does make sense, either as a smaller game, or a fully fledged title.”

Do you think an F-Zero game on the 3DS could be surprising? Can the Wii U’s controller add anything to the racing series? Would you like to see the F-Zero series follow in Excitebike‘s footsteps by taking the series to Nintendo’s digital stores or should it remain retail only?

    • Yeah, like a crossover between Mario Kart 7’s two perspectives. Better still, how about a rearview mirror on the controller’s screen? Being as fast-paced as F-Zero is, simply glancing down at the tablet could be much more convenient than using a button-press to look behind you like in Mario Kart Wii, for example.

    • The only racers I’ve played on 3DS are Mario Kart 7 and F1 2011 – the former doesn’t have a particularly outstanding 3D effect, and the latter’s I barely even used because of the drop in frame rate. However, as F-Zero is so fast-paced, I think it could be put to really good use if a game was ever to release on the 3DS.
